HOME & HOSPICE CARE OF RHODE ISLAND RECEIVES ACCREDITATION FROM COMMUNITY HEALTH ACCREDITATION PROGRAM (CHAP)
Pawtucket, RI –March 2005…Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island (HHCRI), the largest and most comprehensive hospice organization in Rhode Island, is pleased to announce that it has received accreditation from the Community Health Accreditation Program (CHAP).
The Community Health Accreditation Program, Inc. (CHAP) is an independent, non-profit accrediting body. The first accrediting body for community-based health organizations in the United States, CHAP was created in 1965. CHAP was granted “deeming authority” by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS—formerly HCFA) in 1992 for home health, and in 1999 for hospice. This means that instead of state surveys, CHAP has regulatory authorization to survey agencies providing home health and hospice services, to determine whether they meet the Medicare Conditions of Participation (COPs).
Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island was evaluated in a full range of business and clinical areas, such as:
- Quality of services and products
- Attention to consumer needs
- Available clinical and operational resources
- Financial stability
“CHAP accredited organizations must meet stringent standards of care,” stated Analee Wulfkuhle, President & CEO of Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island. “We are extremely proud of this accomplishment. It confirms and recognizes the quality care that Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island provides its patients, their families, and our associates and reflects the dedication and hard work of our staff.”
The survey took place over a 3-day period during which time two surveyors conducted interviews with individual staff members, groups of staff members, governing and advisory board members, and clients. The surveyors reviewed documents, policies, procedures, and clinical records; made joint home visits with staff; and conducted telephone surveys of clients, contractors, and referral sources.
There were no “no quality of care required actions.” Surveyors commended Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island “for its high level of patient satisfaction and appreciation in the community for the services provided; for its dedicated, compassionate staff that functions as a cohesive team; for its atmosphere of mutual respect within the organization at all levels, including the Board of Directors and Volunteers and for its focus from traditional hospice to comprehensive palliative care.”
Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island provides medical, emotional and physical care to individuals with a life-threatening illness and support to their families. It is an independent, not for profit, health care organization, fully licensed by the State and by Medicare as both a home care and hospice agency.
