The following information is provided as a guide for physicians to use when deciding the appropriateness of hospice.

• The KARNOFSKY PERFORMANCE SCALE - is used as a guide to assess functional impairment of terminally ill patients. The lower the Karnofsky score, the worse the survival for most serious illnesses.
