Pawtucket, RI -- November 3, 2006....Nearly
200 healthcare professionals and lay people attended The Stanley
Aronson Educational Symposium on November 2 to hear Dr. Nicholas
Christakis present “How Long Do I Have To Live?” Why Prognostic
Questions Trouble Doctors. In addition to Dr. Christakis’s presentation,
the program included remarks from Analee Wulfkuhle, President &
CEO of HHCRI, Dr. Aronson and John Eng-Wong, HHCRI’s Chairman of
the Board. The program concluded with a panel discussion moderated
by Terry Rochon, RNP, and featuring Drs. Linda Coffin, Joan Teno
and Ed Martin as panel guests.
Held in a spacious ballroom
at the Airport Radisson Hotel, attendees were treated to a full-course
dinner and continuing education credits. The event was part of Home
& Hospice Care of Rhode Island’s 30 th Anniversary Celebration
and our “gift” to the community.
Nicholas Christakis is
a world-renowned author, lecturer, researcher, educator, internist
and sociologist. He conducts research on the socio-cultural facts
that affect the supply, demand and outcomes of medical care. He
is a Professor of Sociology in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences
and Professor of Medical Sociology in the Department of Health Care
Policy at Harvard Medical School; he is an Attending Physician in
the Palliative Medicine Program at Massachusetts General Hospital.
He also co-directs the Robert Wood Johnson Scholars in Health Policy
program at Harvard.
Dr. Christakis’ past work
has examined the accuracy and role of prognosis in medicine, ways
of improving end-of-life care, and neighborhood effects on health
care and illness course. His book on prognosis , Death Foretold:
Prophecy and Prognosis in Medical Care, was published by the
University of Chicago Press in 1999and has been widely reviewed.
Dr. Stanley M. Aronson
is a long-time supporter, advocate, early founder and former board
member of Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island.
