Free Drop-in Bereavement Support Groups Offered

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Free bereavement support groups where those who are mourning the loss of a loved one may drop-in whenever they are given are being offered each month by Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island, the largest and most comprehensive hospice in the state. Some of these groups are available to the general public, and others are for special topic groups.

Grief at the loss of a loved one is natural, according to Wendy Wescott, a Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island bereavement coordinator who facilitates a couple of the drop-in groups. “An important part of dealing with that grief is having people around you who will listen to you and support you as you grieve, and bereavement support groups offer just such an environment,” she says.

Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island drop-in bereavement support groups, each facilitated by one of the organization’s bereavement coordinators, include:

For the general public –

  • General Drop-in Bereavement Support Group, 6-7:30 p.m., the third Monday of every month at Greenville Public Library, 573 Putnam Pike, Greenville, facilitator Wendy Wescott, 401-727-7096.
  • General Drop-in Bereavement Support Group, 6-7:30 p.m., the first Wednesday of every month at Elmhurst Extended Care, 50 Maude St., Providence, facilitator John Charette, 401-727-7098.

For special topic groups –

  • Knitting Club Drop-in Bereavement Support Group, 10-11:30 a.m., the first and third Monday of every month at Yarn at Lace Wings, 761 Bald Hill Rd., Warwick, facilitator Wendy Wescott, 401-727-7096.
  • Parents Losing Adult Children Drop-in Bereavement Support Group, 6-7:30 p.m., the last Thursday of every month at Elmhurst Extended Care, 50 Maude St., Providence, facilitator Pat Thibodeau, 401-789-5200.
  • After the Rainbow Drop-in Bereavement Support Group for gay men and women, 4:30-5:30 p.m., the first and third Thursday of every month at Reflections Coffee Shop, 486 Wickenden St., Providence, facilitator John Charette, 401-727-7098.
